A 70-year-old man has died after a single-vehicle crash Sunday in southwest Charlotte.

Authorities have identified the victim as Curtis Petty.

According to a statement by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, at 12:49pm, officers responded to a single-vehicle crash in the 2300 block of Old Steele Creek Road.

When police got there, they found a heavily damaged 2009 Hyundai Genesis sedan that had run off the road and hit a utility pole and several trees.

The Charlotte Fire Department declared Petty, the driver, deceased when they arrived on the scene.

He was the only occupant in the vehicle, CMPD said.

The initial investigation revealed that Petty was traveling southwest on Old Steele Creek Road at a high rate of speed, when he struggled to get around a curb.

The vehicle ran off the road onto the grass shoulder, sideswiped a utility pole and then struck several trees. Mr. Petty was not wearing a seatbelt and suffered fatal injuries.

CMPD said excessive speed appears to be a contributing factor in this crash.  It is unknown if Mr. Petty was impaired, but toxicology results are pending.

There were no other vehicles involved.

Anyone with information is asked to call 704-432-TIPS to speak with a homicide detective, or call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
