A man suspected of stabbing a 13-year-old girl during a domestic violence incidente was shot and killed late Saturday by a Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer.

The authorities did not immediately name any of the people involved in the incident, including the girl, who was taken to a hospital with life-threatening incidents.

According to a statement issued by CMPD, the incident began at 6:51 p.m. when officers with the South Division were sent to the 1000 Block of Blairbeth Street, just south of the Ballentyne area, in response to a domestic violence assault with a deadly weapon.

“Upon arrival officers encountered an armed Suspect with a knife who was known to the woman and child who lived there at the residence,” the department said in the statement. “He had forced his way into the home, the woman was able to flee, however her daughter was still inside.

“The suspect held the 13-year-old girl at knife point and Officers immediately engaged in attempts to de-escalate the situation,” the statement continued. “Without warning the suspect stabbed the 13-year-old victim. The officers immediately perceived a lethal threat and one officer fired a service weapon, striking the subject,” who died at the scene.

The authorities recovered a knife, and no officer was injured during the encounter, according to CMPD.

The State Bureau of Investigation will be the lead agency investigating the incident. CMPD’s Internal Affairs Bureau will conduct a separate investigation to determine whether CMPD’s policies and procedures were followed.

The officer who killed the suspect was placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard policy whenever an officer discharges a service weapon.
