Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers shot a robbery suspect Sunday afternoon in west Charlotte after the suspect fired several times at the officers, striking at least one patrol car.

The department did not release the suspect’s name but said he was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.

No officers where injured during the incident.

According to a statement by CMPD, officers responding to an armed robbery call were went to the 5100 block of Tuckaseegee Road shortly before 1 p.m. When they got there, the officers identified a suspect “based on the description of the suspect and items noted on the call.”

According to CMPD, the suspect fired several shots as the officers approached. At least one patrol car was struck by a bullet. The police shot back, wounding the suspect.

CMPD released a picture of a gun that the suspect allegedly used.

The State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the shooting, and CMPD will conduct an internal investigation, the department said.
