The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is searching for the suspect in the murder of a 48-year-old man early Saturday morning.

Authorities have identified the victim as James Freiburg.

According to CMPD, around 3:30 a.m. officers heard shots fired in the 10000 block of Hillgrove Lane.

When they got to the location, they saw several casings in the parking lot and Freiburg, who was suffering from life-threatening injuries.

He was pronounced deceased inside an apartment on scene by Medic.

According to CMPD investigation, Freiburg was struck by a stray bullet that stemmed from a large shootout in the parking lot between two groups of people that had no relations to the victim.

CMPD on Monday released photos of the alleged suspect’s vehicle —  a dark grey or black dodge Charger/Challenger.

The vehicle has extensive front-end damage including the right front headlight out and possibly several bullet holes, police said.

The vehicle was seen heading on Highway 160 towards I-485 after the incident.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call 704-432-TIPS to speak with a homicide detective, or call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
