A Mecklenburg County sheriff’s deputy was recovering from surgery Sunday after he was shot during a traffic stop in northeast Charlotte.

The shooting happened around 4:15 p.m. Saturday on Salome Church Road, just beyond the I-485 beltway.

According to information released by the Sheriff’s Office, Whyms was shot while approaching a vehicle.

The suspect, Aiden Bryant, fired multiple shots during the encounter, the Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. Bryant, too, was wounded when Deputy Whyms returned fire, the statement said.

Both the deputy and suspect were taken to Atrium Health Main, where Whyms was said to be in stable condition on Saturday. The Sheriff’s Office did not release information about Bryant’s condition but said he was in custody at the hospital.

Whyms has been employed by the Sheriff’s office since 2002.

In a statement Saturday, Sheriff Garry L. McFadden tanked a member of the North Carolina Highway Patrol who administered a tourniquet to the injured sheriff’s deputy.
