Charlotte is a city brimming with newcomers.

By some estimates, about 120 people move here daily, making it one of the nation’s fastest-growing cities.

Lisa Maskill Pollock arrived from Bridgeport, Connecticut, just two months ago to be closer to family.

Occupation: Financial Firm manager

What are some of your hobbies?

Since the pandemic, I’ve been teaching myself how to roller skate. I’m not sure if it’s fair to call it roller skating. I can roll on some skates but that’s about it. There’s a lot of rinks out here so I can get some more practice in.

What brought you here?

It’s something that I wanted to do for a long time. I have family here. When airfare was cheaper, I came here two to three times a year and I just loved it. I always wanted to relocate here when I was able to find work.

Most importantly, a lot of what kept me from moving right away was my parents were still with me at the time. So, a lot of my attention was towards their care. They are buried down here so it just makes it a little easier to do all of that and live my life now.

What do you like best about Charlotte?

Just the diversity. It reminds me of home. There is so much more to do here and the activities are fairly easy to get to.

What do you like least?

The driving. It just seems like there is a lot of construction which is no different from home. There’s construction and there’s traffic, which is to be expected. But that’s really it. To be honest, I haven’t ventured out a whole lot since I started work and I work from home.

How do you hope to get involved in the community?

One of the things that I had been thinking about is just being a better steward for my community. I wasn’t as involved back home in Connecticut as I feel I should have been. So, I definitely want to explore the different sides of Charlotte and do some volunteering.

A cousin of mine is friends with a candidate that’s running for the house of representatives. She will send me activities here and there about where she’ll be. I would love to get involved in something like that.

What’s been your most memorable moment since moving here?

I would have to say going to the emergency room and finding out I had appendicitis, a week after moving here. I had no clue. I was experiencing a weird pain and it wasn’t going away. I decided to be on the safe side and went to the ER and they said, “No, ma’am, you need to have an appendectomy today. Your appendix is about to rupture.”

I was sore for a few days, but I was able to get back to normal activity in two weeks.
