Charlotte has no shortage of new faces. Meet Shereese Floyd, a Norfolk, Virginia, native who has been in the Queen City for seven months.

Occupation: storyteller, speechwriter, marketing consultant

Hobbies: reading, writing, thrifting

What brought you here?

I wanted to fall in love.

I wanted to see myself in a way I’d only dared dream.

Norfolk, Virginia, is my hometown. I’d given it almost a half-century of my life, but it was time for reinvention. I spent 18 years actively learning about myself in a relationship I thought was forever, but when a couple of forevers turned into a swan song, I took the lessons, packed up, and set off to find my truest self.

With 20 boxes of life to my name, I picked Charlotte off the map. Having never been here before, I decided this was the best place to chase my dreams and finally find my soul mate. It turns out the fairytale ending I was truly in search of was the one where I declare ’til death do us part’ to myself.

In Charlotte, I live the lifestyle I once could only imagine, and my work as a storyteller expanded as well.

Here, my vision and my reality finally match. I’m finally home within myself and within this great city.

What do you like best about Charlotte?

Charlotte is a true microcosm. There is so much diversity here in people and in activities. I am leaning into all kinds of experiences — being introduced to different cultures and being challenged to expand not only my thinking but my way of being.

What do you like least about Charlotte?

In fairness, I haven’t explored the city enough to not like anything about it. During the first few months here, I felt like a tourist — like a visitor in my own life. Now, I feel more grounded.

I will say this is a true sports town. For someone who is not into sports, people often make the assumption that I have an official team or that I know the players or the lingo. I’m often caught off guard giving the “I-don’t-who-that-is” blank stare.

I have been put on notice that I have to fix this — immediately.

How do you hope to get involved in the community?

I hope to get more connected to the business community. My company, Witness My Life, is a storytelling firm that helps organizations tell their stories so that they are impossible to ignore. My personal mission is to create a world where people do not feel invisible — a world where people feel seen, heard and valued.

I truly believe stories are the one way to bring the world together, and I’m going to do my part to make it so.

What’s been your most memorable moment since moving here?

My most memorable moment was moving into my dream apartment, sitting in the dark, purging myself of my old life, and realizing that choosing to move to Charlotte was the best decision.

Reinvention takes courage. I’d done the hard part; now the real work begins.

Charlotte had all the right elements. I never saw myself as a queen — until I got here.
