Welcome to February! ❤️

With Black History Month, Valentine’s Day and the Lunar New Year kicking off, there’s no shortage of events around either occasion. (Can’t forget Groundhog Day).

From African art and drumming to love- and heartbreak-themed performances, there’s something for every mood, whether reflection, gratitude or romance.

If you’re not in a lovey-dovey mood and prefer something more lighthearted, we’ve got that too. For example, a veteran comedian will hit the stage all weekend with her unique take on the latest headlines and world events.

We try to cover what our QCity community wants to see and do. If we missed something, let us know.

Happy weekend!

This weekend: A photo exhibition reflecting on Black education in the Jim Crow South

Before Black children in the South were entitled to public education, the Rosenwald Schools were built — one-room structures made of clapboard and nails.

Today, about 500 of those former schoolhouses survive, many abandoned and in disrepair.

On Saturday at the Charlotte Museum of History, photographer Andrew Feiler will present “A Better Life for Their Children,” a traveling exhibition that reflects on the history and impact of the Rosenwald Schools. Keep reading. [Jalon Hill]

Black Violin: one night only!

Black Violin is led by classically trained string players Wil B. (viola) and Kev Marcus (violin). Joining them onstage are DJ SPS and drummer Nat Stokes. The band uses its unique blend of classical and hip-hop music to overcome stereotypes while encouraging people of all ages, races and economic backgrounds to join together to break down cultural barriers. Catch them at Belk Theater February 15.

Charlotte Ballet’s 50th anniversary performance opens this weekend

Three Black choreographers have created many of the works within this historic performance. We caught up with one of them — Ja’ Malik, who went from a Charlotte Ballet dancer to become a New York City choreographer. Keep reading.
